DIRECT PURCHASE 2011
The City of Ottawa is seeking to purchase artworks by professional artists in all visual arts media for display throughout City of Ottawa facilities and public spaces. Artists who would like their work to be considered for purchase must submit images of existing artwork for the jury’s review. The City of Ottawa was one of the first cities in North America to adopt a visual arts policy. Developed in 1985, the City of Ottawa’s Public Art Program manages and exhibits an art collection of over 1700 works focusing on local artists. The collection is comprised of works of art that allow for an appreciation, an understanding and a future interpretation of the City’s visual arts history.
The City of Ottawa has set aside a percentage of the 2011 Direct Purchase budget specifically to support area emerging artists.

Submissions must be received by mail or by hand no later than 5 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2011. Submissions post-marked May 16, 2011 will be accepted; however, faxed or emailed submissions will not be accepted. Incomplete or late proposals will not be reviewed.

Divertimento Orchestra is an Ottawa-based group of 68 musicians. It began in 1984 as a small ensemble in someone's basement for their own pleasure and has evolved into a full-fledged community symphony.

Divertimento Orchestra is now looking for new String Players, as well as a Bass Trombone and a French Horn player.

Corel Endowment Fund for the Arts Award - Deadline for Application
This year's deadline for applications is May 16, 2011.

Take a look at the possibilities of the Corel Endowment Fund for the Arts Award. This award assists artists in all disciplines. The award was established at the Community Foundation of Ottawa in 1997 through the combined fundraising efforts of the Council for the Arts in Ottawa and Corel Corporation. The first awards were presented in 1998. To date, the fund has contributed to 32 artists' projects.

Nils Frahm, born in 1982, had an early introduction to music. During his childhood he was taught to play piano by Nahum Brodski – a student of the last scholar of Tschaikowski. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of the classical pianists before him as well as contemporary composers. In early 2008 he founded Durton Studio, where he has worked with likeminded musicians.

Conference on Caravaggio at Library and Archives, Friday, May 13 at 7:30 pm
On Friday, May 13, Mirella Ioly will give an illustrated lecture on the great 17th century Italian artist, Caravaggio. Mrs. Ioly’s lecture, “Arte e società nell'età di Caravaggio” (Art and Society in the Age of Caravaggio), will be in Italian. The talk takes place at Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, at 7:30 pm.  A discussion period in English and Italian will follow.
Admission is free. Refreshments, courtesy of Il Negozio Nicastro (792 Bank Street), will follow.
Ms. Ioly’s lecture will be followed on Wednesday, May 25 by another conference,  “Caravaggio and His Followers” by Prof. Francesco Loriggio, also at Library and Archives Canada. He welcomes: 2011 Juno jazz vocalist of the year Kellylee Evans, BAHons/97; critically acclaimed soprano Shawne Elizabeth, DMus/95, an associate performance instructor in the School for Studies in Art and Culture and resident soprano with fusion opera company Ooh Lah Lah; Nadia Petrella, BMus/07, a gifted young artist now studying at the Manhattan School of Music who will be appearing later this year with Pellegrini Opera; Erinne-Colleen Laurin, an emerging young soprano who is a volunteer with the Music Chapter of the Carleton University Alumni Association; and pianist John Kofi Dapaah, a current Carleton music student.
Film Screening
Winds of Heaven: Emily Carr, Carvers and the Spirits of the Forest is a ninety-minute filmic journey into the deep brooding mystery and inner beauty of Emily Carr’s paintings—a  lyrical, luminescent and entertaining impression of the life of Carr and her connection to the First Nations people of the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. Winner of the Best Documentary Photography Award of the Canadian Cinematographers Society, (April 2011) the 90-minute work has been praised for being “visually sumptuous” by The Globe and Mail (January 2011) and described as “a beautiful film whose cinematography flows like acrylic paint across canvas” by The Toronto Star (January 2011). The film is directed by Michael Ostroff, an instructor in the School of Journalism and Communications at Carleton University, the original score was written by Edmund Eagan, BMus/82.

This one-year certificate program is designed for students with an interest in fine art and art related vocations.  Students experience hands-on training in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and digital photography.  Courses address the role of artists in society and investigate career paths aligned with fine art, including: professional artist, gallery and museum programming, arts administration and art education.  This program is ideal for students that want to prepare a portfolio for applications to university studies in fine art.

Splitting the Choir
The Moving Images of Donigan Cumming

The Canadian Film Institute is pleased to present Splitting the Choir, a two-part retrospective of the videographic work of Montreal-based artist Donigan Cumming. The event marks a period of sixteen years since Cumming’s first video: A PRAYER FOR NETTIE (1995), a haunting and unsettling elegy to the artist’s long-time photographic model Nettie Harris, known for her stunning poses in the photographic series Pretty Ribbons (1993).
An award-winning photographer and filmmaker, Cumming has internationally exhibited and screened videos that are widely praised (and criticized) for their genre-bending, unsettling iconoclasm. Working from within the social realist documentary mode, Cumming explores the frontiers of representation, pushing ethical boundaries into uncharted areas – where many artists fear to tread. Cumming’s work blurs the lines between ethnographic film and the theatre of the absurd, incisively splitting the choir of audience opinion. As he continues to chart the underrepresented life-worlds and experiences of the marginal (elderly, ill, damaged, broken) citizens of Montreal, those who would seem to be so radically “other,” Cumming insistently reminds us of the things we share in common.
This retrospective coincides with the publication of the Canadian Film Institute’s critical anthology, Splitting the Choir: The Moving Images of Donigan Cumming, edited by Scott Birdwise.
The essays in this volume take up a range of topics in relation to Cumming’s videos, from the role of photography and memory in the moving images and temporalities of video to questions of ethics, representation and performance in the documentary.

The Art of Mourning in Ottawa: ReVisioning Victorian Bereavement Artefacts

In partnership with Prairie Scene
Saskatchewan-born, Ottawa-based artist and academic Cindy Stelmackowich will present the findings of her artist-in-residence project at the Bytown Museum. During the winter of 2011, Ms. Stelmackowich unearthed and researched a wide range of Victorian mourning artefacts from the Museum’s collection. From her study of these artefacts she intends to create new artworks that will highlight the intimately-charged visual languages of mourning, mortality, beauty and death.
Mourning artefacts in the Bytown Museum’s collection comprise a wide range of decorative, domestic and public memorabilia, and include hair wreaths, veils, clothing, jewelry such as lockets, bracelets and earrings which incorporate hair, and decorative items such as memory ware jugs.
The Bytown Museum’s acting curator, Judith Parker, inaugurated the residency program in 2011 to facilitate access to the Museum’s significant collection. The residency program supports innovative research and creative interpretation of this important cultural repository that reflects Ottawa’s early history.

  The trademarks of Nina Cherney`s work are exuberant colour and dynamic
  brushwork. In this exhibition, the artist presents a series of paintings
  evoking the sights and smells of the landscape around her country home in
  the Laurentians. These paintings refer to a sublime moment, when natural
  beauty overwhelms us. The large scale and thick layers of paint translate
  this awe and joy. The quirky perspectives and shapes and vivid colours
  deliver intense emotions, forcing the viewer to react.

  Nina Cherney lives and works in Montreal and is a graduate
  of Concordia University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in
  Painting and Drawing .She has exhibited her work in galleries in Canada .Her
  work can also be found in numerous corporate collections.

Ride of Silence - Gatineau
Date: May 18, 2011  Time: meet at 6:30 pm,

This annual event started in 2003 in Texas in memory of cyclists injured or killed on the road.  The ride now takes place in over 320 cities worldwide on the third Wednesday of May.

The Ride of Silence is like a funeral procession. We will be riding  at around 15 km/h. No talking is allowed, as silence is how we can remember our deceased sisters and brothers. Black arm bands will be worn in memory of the deceased, and a red arm band will be worn for those injured or intimidated by motorists. A bicycle helmet is mandatory, and red and white flashing lights are a good idea to be seen.

We also take this opportunity to raise the drivers' awareness that we are here.

PARIKRAMA: a journey in Indian Dance, Yoga, Tabla,
Indian artistic and performing arts give form to profound philosophical ideas. According to Hindu philosophy the world was both created and destroyed by the dance of Shiva/Nataraja. The small hour glass shaped drum (damaru) in Nataraja’s right hand provides the rhythm for the creation of the universe, while the fire of destruction held in his left hand is unleashed during his cataclysmic dance of destruction. The semi-circular ring of fire (tiruvasi) which surrounds the dancing Shiva emphasises the cyclical nature of the universe.
At Arts Court Theatre on 15 and 16 April, Cultural Horizons presents a show based on both philosophical and environmental themes. Three Ottawa artists, Anjali, Basia Going and Blair Miller, collaborate to create a colourful and spiritually moving experience. Inspired by the philosophy of ancient Hindu texts (Upanishads and Shiva Puranas) and based around the cyclical structure of the cosmos, Anjali (dance), Basia (yoga), and Blair (tabla) explore the symbolism of Nataraja, performing in front of exquisite images and unique video of Hindu art, temples and the dynamic scenery of the Himalayas, where Shiva performs his eternal cosmic dance.
Anjali has studied in India with some of the most famous hereditary masters. In this performance, she includes dances presented from the traditional classical Indian repertoire using innovative choreography recently presented in New Delhi, India.  The show is an exploration of our relationship with the Earth and is set to the poetry of the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Blair Miller (tabla) highlights Anjali’s dance in the Kathak and Sufi Dance traditions. The evening concludes with a unique collaboration between Anjali and Basia, exploring the rich mythology of the God Shiva through dance and yoga. Basia (Adishesha Yoga) is one of Ottawa’s leading yoga teachers. Blair Miller has trained and performed in India. to critical acclaim.

2012 EXHIBITION SEASON

The City of Ottawa’s Public Art Program operates two professional galleries: Karsh-Masson Gallery and City Hall Art Gallery. Both galleries exhibit contemporary artwork in a wide range of styles and mediums to promote and increase awareness of the visual arts in Ottawa.

Exhibitions are reviewed and chosen once a year by a jury of local professional artists and art specialists. The best possible attempt is made for jurors to be representative of the range of submissions received in any given year.

Proposals are juried based on: artistic merit, professionalism and coherence of the artwork represented in the images submitted; the written proposal; the submission’s relevance to the galleries’ mandate; and appropriateness to the public nature of the gallery spaces. All submissions received are automatically considered for both galleries. The jury will only consider one exhibition submission per applicant.

ELIGIBILITY

This Call for Submissions is open to professional artists, artist collectives and curators who are:

• Emerging, mid-career or established

• Deaf and/or have a disability, Indigenous, francophone and/or culturally diverse

• Working in fine art, media arts, craft, design, performance art and other new art forms

• Local, national or international. Priority is given to applicants who live or have lived within the 150 km radius of Ottawa however residents from outside the Ottawa area are encouraged to apply.

• Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status

ELIGIBLE EXHIBITIONS
• Solo, two-person and group exhibitions
• Curated exhibitions and circulating exhibitions from other institutions
• Exhibitions from local universities and the diplomatic sector
• Exhibitions from the City’s Fine Art Collection as well as the archival and heritage collections

SWARM GALLERY CRAWL: Tuesday, April 26, 6 to 9 p.m.
MICHAEL HOSALUK (Saskatoon) takes the chair as his point of departure, “liberating” it from its function by making it an outline building block. The public is then invited to interact with the chair units to create larger sculptures, even to the point of taking a chair to plant it in a new environment, bursting beyond the specialized public space of a gallery into real public space. Hosaluk’s chairs have been rescued by Saskatoon’s Fire Department from a thawing river and dismantled from a tree in the downtown core. There have been many such acts of “Chairorism” that have gone on to inspire a play and short film.

IFCO’s Oxberry camera and animation stand can be used for filming essentially any 2-D animation, such as traditional cell animation or collage animation. It can also be used to film stills or titles. The camera can be converted to run either 16mm or 35mm film. Camera movements can be made manually or computerised.
Note: This camera will only be rented to members who have taken the workshop.

Correction is one of our greatest allies. The eraser, white-out, and the backspace key all give us the supreme power to take back what we have done and improve upon it. Imagine typing an email (letter, I guess) on a typewriter. Every keystroke counts. Every keystroke is final, absolute. What a terrifying prospect. Imagine the energy it would take to write something under such strict demands. *Shudder*. No, thank you. With the ability to correct our actions, we can relax and be flexible. Try something out, see if it works; if not, just correct it. With this licence to make mistakes comes an undeniable freedom. The dirty side of correction is that even if we can correct something, the original version exists somewhere. Some one will have read that typo before you catch it and correct it. The disgusting, indecent, erring version can haunt you. The ability to correct can also grab hold of a person and drive them to insanity. The song must be perfect. There can be no mistakes in this document. This risotto must have the ideal balance of savory herbs and bright citrus. This month at (Cult)ure, we take a look at the things in our cultural landscape that need to be righted. We also ask the question, "When is a mistake a good thing?" PBS tree painting icon Bob Ross called mistakes "happy accidents," and maybe he was on to something. No, wait. Let us correct that. He wasn't.

Gallery115: Annex presents: (nouveau) flaneur, photographic works by Richard Jansen Exhibition: April 1, 2011-June 17, 2011 Vernissage: April 1, 2011, 5pm-7pm
We are pleased to announce the opening of Gallery 115: Annex, which is situated on the 6th floor of the Morisset library, on the University of Ottawa Campus. (nouveau) flâneur is the first exhibition to be shown in the new satellite gallery, and marks significant advancement in the awareness and celebration of student art on campus.
The flaneur, birthed of 19th century urbanization, observes the workings and cityscapes of a society continually in flux. The many impressions of the flâneur manifest themselves in a variety of media such as writing, painting, and photography and are subject to change with society's embrace of new media. In his artistic practice, Richard Jansen illustrates the way in which a 21st century flâneur adapts and responds to the omnipresence of technology within society.

Sous la forme d’un jeu nomade, des modules de bois sur roues invitent le visiteur à les manipuler, les déplacer, les organiser comme bon lui semble. Les élémnts mobiles
sont source d’expériences diverses. Une forêt de cloisons mouvantes engagera le visiteur à créer ses propres pièces, espaces, couloirs ou labyrinthes, dans la plus joyeuse liberté. Un paysage mobile, donc, d’apparence trompeusement simple, et un brin communautaire.
L’artiste remercie la Ville de Montmagny, le Conseil des arts du Canada ainsi que le Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec pour leur soutien dans la réalisation de ce projet.

Students can choose to take a short course such as Jewelry Making & Metalsmithing where they will learn the basic techniques in order to design and create their own jewelry or they can take a one day workshop like the Precious Metal Clay Boot Camp (for PMC lovers) where they will learn technical and practical information condensed in a one day intensive class.
