Dear Smartypants,

I want to buy a great birthday gift for my boyfriend.  He's really into technology, but every time I buy him a gadget, he returns it.  How can I find a gift he'll love?

Shopping in the Dark

Dear Take the Easy Way Out,

Here's an idea: stop buying him gadgets! If he returns them every single time, then maybe  you should accept that he's too picky for you to be able to give him one. Surely there are other things that interest him (movies, books, bands). You could also try talking to him about different options that he would like, and you choose between them when it comes time to buy. It lacks the element of surprise, sure, but you ensure he gets something he likes. If you're really into both giving him a gadget and surprising him, you could start checking out podcasts like This Week in Technology, scanning the headlines on Techmeme, and keeping up with Gizmodo and Engadget. If he's that into gadgets, he probably does at least one of those things, but you might get the jump on him. But seriously, think about not going gadget route next time.

Generously,

Miss Smartypants
