Dear Miss Smartypants,

I cleaned out my closet last weekend and found a really cute skirt tucked away at the back. It still fits me and everything! Now that I've taken it into the light, I can see how it got pushed back there. It's olive green. A dark one, which is a bit better, but olive nonetheless. Aside from white, I can't find a single colour to go with it. I don't want to buy a bunch of new clothes just to suit something I obviously didn't care that much about to begin with, but there's got to be something I'm not thinking of. Any advice?

Just Not Camouflage

Dear What, No Brown?

Olive is a notoriously difficult colour to match, and my first instinct is to pair it with jean. I'm guessing you don't have a jean top just lying around. Let's colour-wheel this thing: red is green's complimentary colour, so you could wear that if you really want to stand out (and look like a Christmas tree). Purple and orange form the triad. Orange is a little too Halloween, but a deep, majestic purple could really make that olive sing. A nice lilac could lighten it up if that's more your thing. Blue and yellow are green's analogous colours ('cause, you know, they make green), so they'll go as well (depending on your shades, as always). Camo or no, you are better off with a brown shoe. Actually, now that I think about it, a nice burgundy wouldn't be too bad with the skirt either. Just not a fire engine red. Otherwise, you'll be alright if you stick to more neutral colours like grey, tan, or ecru.

Fashionably,

Miss Smartypants
