2011 Call for Artists
For the Love of the Farm Fine Art Exhibition and Sale
Application Deadline: 2:00 p.m. March 1, 2011

The Friends of the Central Experimental Farm (FCEF) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that was founded in 1988.  Annually it provides more than 15,000 volunteer hours to maintain, promote and protect the Central Experimental Farm (C.E.F.), a national historic site and cultural heritage landscape in the heart of Ottawa.  The Friends promote the Farm through educational programs and help care for the Ornamental Gardens which contain a number of collections including lilacs, peonies, roses, iris, daylilies and much more.  The Friends also help in the care of the Arboretum which contains approximately 4000 specimens representing more than 1000 different types of trees and shrubs. The beauty of these areas on the Farm provides a peaceful escape for those in the Ottawa area and for visitors from around the world.

This art exhibition provides an opportunity for selected artists to show and sell their work over a four-day period in Building 72 in the Arboretum of the Central Experimental Farm.

Vampire Diaries is Your Friend, so Stop Being a Dick

Posted by April in witches , wet hot american , werewolves , vampires , vampire diaries , tv , spiffy new do , continuity? , aw family

Photo Credit: Annette Brown/The CWWords to live by, Stefan. Last night’s new The Vampire Dairies, “Daddy Issues,” mostly had nothing to do with Uncle Daddy (and his spiffy new ‘do) and more to do with how vampires and werewolves and can learn to be friends if they could act more like Stefan and Caroline (and dearly departed Mason, for that matter). Stefan tries for a truce, but it all goes awry when Caroline gets kidnapped. Damon bookends the episode with time in the shower and tub, and Elena wears a ponytail all episode long. Aside from a few expositionary retcons, another delightful episode from this compulsively watchable series.

When in doubt, put Damon in the shower

The camera’s lovingly worshiping Damon’s wet form in his fabulous, spacious glassed in shower with rain shower water head, and, man alive, I bet Damon designed this room himself. The camera is sadly interrupted by the heretofore unseen MASSIVE tv in Damon’s room feeding us the news about, among other things, the missing girl Damon totally murdered last week. Oops! Everyone’s watching that same thing over at Gilbert rez because they all love breakfast television. Well, Uncle Daddy does. Elena and her ponytail (!) are too busy pumping him for information about what he’s doing there. He’s saved from having to answer his daughter’s questions by Jenna’s entrance and extremely righteous anger at seeing John again. Alaric takes about ten seconds to bolts. Heh. Unfortunately, Jenna tries to tell John that he has no right, essentially, so John tells her that as Elena’s biological dad, he’s got plenty of them. At this point, my viewing companion and I get into a disagreement about having rights v. having to go to court to assert those rights, but I seem to recall that John and Jenna were co-guardians and that John just never stepped up. Anyway, pointless. John’s there because Jenna is incapable of observing who spends the night at her house.

Welcome to the Exile Issue

Posted by admin in see ya hitler! , ottawa , in the mag , exile

Exile is a cold and unyielding place. We exile that which we can no longer stand, the things we find most reprehensible. Crimes against humanity? Adult contemporary music? Disagreement with the Pope? See ya later, Hilter, Michael Bolton, and Dante!

Exile can also be self-imposed. We can choose to exile ourselves from a part or all of society. I will never eat at that Eastside Mario's again. Ever. In choosing exile, do we also not choose a certain freedom? Freedom from the things (or ideas) that bind us to our past? Freedom to be whoever we want, away from the things that defined us in our previous lives. Exile is certainly not for the faint of heart, but neither is February in Ottawa.

It is difficult for the written word to do this show justice, but I am going to try my best. I don’t know a lot about the drag world (although I recently catalogued Shims in Hollywood), but I encourage you to join me as we learn about what makes a fabulous drag queen.

In today’s society we have moved so far away from our animalistic selves... we shave off body hair, accessorize our bodies, layer clothing over top, it is all a facade that detracts from our true mammalian selves. Although we have tried so hard to differentiate ourselves from the animal kingdom, our actions often betray these efforts. Instincts come from the very domain that we claim to reign over, and more often than not when a human acts in a way that is disapproved by society, we link it to a base animalistic trait. While Balestreri focuses on this idea of man and animal being inexplicably linked, her artistry creates a wonderful flux between the two.

MOVIEGOERS GET SECOND CHANCE TO WATCH BEST FILMS FROM THE OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL 2010
The Canadian Film Institute (CFI) is giving moviegoers a second chance to view the best films featured at the 2010 Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF).  The CFI is presenting the Best of the OIAF, which is currently touring at various venues in Canada and around the world with a stop in Ottawa, Ontario on January 29, 2011.  The Best of Ottawa program showcases films that were awarded top honours from the Festival’s official competition as well as films that were audience favourites.
“The program is a great opportunity to view films that you may have missed during our 2010 packed out edition or even just get a chance to enjoy the films again,” said OIAF Managing Director Kelly Neall.
The program includes extraordinary films such as: David O’Reilly’s 2010 Grand Prize-winning, The External World; the pulsating metamorphic madness of Andreas Hykade’s, Love & Theft; Dustin Grella’s deeply moving and brilliantly executed award-winning film, Prayers for Peace; the heart-thumping tale of Sinna Mann (Angry Man) by Anita Killi; and the snap crackling goodness of Masaki Okuda's, Kuchao (A Gum Boy).
Be warned though, several of the films are sexually explicit.  This is not a program to bring the kids or your mother to.
The screening of the Best of the OIAF in Ottawa happens at 7 p.m. on January 29, 2011 at the Library and Archives Canada (395 Wellington Street at Bay).  Free parking is available on the west side of the building.  Admission is $8.00 for CFI members, seniors and students, and $12.00 for the general public. Annual CFI memberships are available at the door for $15.00.  For more information, call: (613) 232-8769 or e-mail: info@animationfestival.ca.

Vampire Diaries: Normally this is the Place Where I Would Put a Quote

Posted by April in werewolves , vampires , vampire diaries , that's the clicking sound of death , get me that gif , continuity?

Photo: Bob Mahoney/The CWANGRY DISCLAIMER: I would like to put a nice bit of Damon witticism or Stefan insight in the blog post title, I really would, but my local CW’s The Vampire Diaries sound problem was completely out of control last night. With apologies to my regular viewing companions because I’ve tried not to bring it up lest it become something that drives them nuts as well, for I can keep quiet no longer. This season, there’s a little buzz-click-click to cuts into Vampire Diaries. Maybe a whir-click-click. It happens repeatedly throughout the hour, it’s only on the CW, and it’s only during Vampire Diaries. I have no idea what’s going on over at PIX 11 (WPIX, New York), but last night’s new entry, “The Descent,” featured not only the buzz-click-click in regular rotation but combined it with the SOUND CUTTING OUT ENTIRELY. Thanks for that, PIX. So, this recap comes with a warning that I may have missed something very important thanks to the incompetence of the PIX sound people.

Okay, recap time. Wait, another apology: perhaps because I was so annoyed with the sound, this episode struck me as long. Not in a “wow, look how much they can cram into an hour” way that this show usually uses to inspire awe, but in a “how is this still going on” way. Also maybe in a “Where’s Stefan?” way.

For reals this time, the recap. Last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, “The Descent,” started off just right with shirtless Stefan, continued on to Damon’s best Florence Nightingale routine, and reminded Elena that she’s our brave little toaster for a reason. Also, Caroline needs a break from all the kissing.

Top Chef: Restaurant Wars!

Posted by Lauren in top chef , so long Foam King , restaurant wars , recap , Etch is a dumb name , coconut powder , Blaise hair alert

Well it has taken 5 weeks, but finally, my wish has come true. We have only 1 Dale and 1 Tiffany left. Last week, Jamie and Red Hair Tiffani got the boot for their failures at the beachside fish fry. Wow…as Carla points out to us, there are only 3 women left at this point (herself, Antonia and Tiffany). We learn that Antonia has earned the nickname “The Black Hammer” because people she works with on teams seem to end up going home (both in her season and this time around as well). Hilarious.

The chefs head to Le Bernadin (Eric Ripert’s seafood restaurant), and observe a fish cleaning master at work. They seem genuinely awed by his skills.

Quickfire: Fillet and portion 1 cod and 1 fluke (to Le Bernadin’s standards) in 10 minutes

Breaking Dawn: Who wants to see Renesme?

Posted by April in vampires , twilight , demon spawn

So, remember when Edward and Bella had sex? Because you can get pregnant the first time, ladies, Bella totally does with a demon baby that breaks her spine and kills her (spoiler? except that these things I am telling you are why Breaking Dawn is completely awesome. Still, loads 'o spoilers). Her unfortunately-named daughter is Renesme, a freaky vampire-human hybrid that ages rapidly and can implant her own memories in your mind with a touch of her hand. Now who wants to see that kid? Everybody? Thought so:

Renesme!

Apparently this is just a photo shoot with Mackenzie Foy and not in The Meadow like I originally thought. While she mysteriously appears to be a human and not the cyborg necessary for the role, I do appreciate that she, you know, doesn't look like a scary monster China doll (porcelain skin, rosy cheeks, ringlets, drinks blood), as per the book.

Top Chef: We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

Posted by Lauren in what on earth is Porgy? , top chef , Succotash! , recap , Marcel is an ass , foams are gross

Last week, Casey got knifed. Everyone, including Jamie, thought she would be going home. I would much rather have Casey back this week than Jamie, who seems to have given up. There is some smack talk between Marcel and Dale about how Dale didn’t cook enough food for the challenge and how Marcel thinks he should have one. In a bit of an argument on the rooftop, Marcel drinks Bombay gin straight from the bottle. Marcel is super worked up about it, and Dale (to his credit) just walks away.

Elimination Challenge: Catch and Cook Fish for a Beach Party

It is super early in the morning and the chefs find out they will be fishing in Montauk. They meet Padma and Tom and find out that they will have 5 hours to catch as many fish as possible and then they will cook them on the beach for 200 guests. Oh and it will be a double elimination!

Oh, thank goodness: this vampire-less holiday break was killing me (Being Human premieres tonight on Space, so hopefully sexy Sam Witwer can solve that with a quickness). In the meantime, who wants to see the first official photo from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1? You do!

Banging

That's right, my pretties! The first official photo is a wedding night photo, so get yourselves ready for the love that last forever or at least until your demon spawn breaks your spine. What? That's the story! I didn't write it.
