Theme is wide open.

Deadline to submit: May 1st,2012

Stupid ZooeyZooey Deschanel, who seems to live her life as if the movie industry invention "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" were an actual thing, dropped out of university because "my specialness [was] not appreciated in this place".  She further comments on how rough it is to not be appreciated as the unique snowflake she is in an interview with Allure (via Gawker).  Good thing Hollywood is willing to fawn all over her in the manner which she deserves.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter got a better trailer

Posted by April in vampires , trailer , hunters , hotties , bramm! , abraham lincoln

Good news, guys! As suspected, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter's second trailer, a.k.a. not the teaser trailer, did a much better job at convincing me to see the movie. Even "Are you a patriot or a vampire?" makes sense now! See for yourselves:

RuPaul's Drag Race: You gotta have mass appeal!

Latrice Royale's gorgeous Mainstage look

RuPaul's Drag Race
: Float Your Boat

Last week, Chad Michaels blew us away with his dead-on Cher impersonation. Kenya Michaels was sent sashaying away for not knowing who Beyoncé was and for being incoherent. I can't say we'll miss her. Phi Phi was told to step it the eff up, and we are really over her.

The mini challenge this week is a wet t-shirt contest. The ladies each get a new silicone breast plate from some hilarious website that donated them. The contest is various degrees of frightening, and we see Latrice's blurred business. Latrice also does the freaking splits, which I am always impressed with.

Best ever dance hall tunesAt (Cult)ure we're in the business of producing written words, but that doesn't mean that we don't enjoy things like spoken words or words set to music or things that don't have words at all. So each week we'll bring you a small collection of non-written things that we enjoyed.

Best Podcast: Mike & Tom Eat Snacks, "Episode 52"

Mike and Tom have always made a point of not revealing the snack until they actually get around to eating it, so I'm not going to spoil the fun. Nor will I explain who Matty Ice is or what he does to deserve a two-person standing ovation. If these simple facts aren't enough to tempt you, well, laughter is the best medicine for whatever is the matter with you. Click. Listen. Laugh.

Volunteer Curator needed

Posted by admin in volunteer , ottawa , curator , arts

Volunteer Curator is needed to hang art at a medical clinic.
A Medical clinic in the east end of Ottawa needs a Curator volunteer willing to hang art in their clinic and change it every three months. This is a great opportunity to get your art out of your basement and display it in front of many many eyes with the possibility of selling the work. The clinic does not rent the walls out, they offer them for free. The West Carleton Family Health Team has been doing this in the west end for several years and sales have been made. No fee is paid, but the Curator can request a commission to help offset their time and effort. It's great exposure, and people in the west end are beginning to know the names of the artists who display and remember them when they meet them at other exhibitions.
If you would like more details or to talk to the WCFHT curator, please contact Catherine Gutsche at: cgutsche@xplornet.com or 613-839-1324.

RuPaul's Drag Race: Snatch Game (You Gotta Know your Icons!)

Snatch Game Contestants Michelle Visage, Jessica Simpson, Wendy Wiliams and CherLast week, Madame LaQueer was sent home, just as we learned she was sort of annoying. This week brings us a great RuPaul's Drag Race tradition in the form of Snatch Game, and you should all check this episode out.

The mini-challenge is called Beat the Cock, and the ladies compete in rooster and hen themed tasks. It is absurd, as usual. Phi Phi wins at pinning the rooster on Ru's face, Dida Ritz successfully blows a feather across a room, and Milan wins a ring toss game. Those three compete in a final challenge that is a variation of an egg and spoon race. I'll not go into more details. Phi Phi wins a phone call home, and Chad Michaels is sad because it is his anniversary with his partner. In a rare moment of humanity (at least on the show), Phi Phi gives up his call to Chad.

Ru introduces the Snatch Game challenge. Snatch Game is Ru's version of the 1970s classic game show Match Game. If you ever get the chance to see an episode of the original Match Game, check that stuff out. Gene Rayburn basically corrals 6 celebrities (who may or may not be drunk) and makes them answer dumb questions while horrified house wives play along. It is great stuff. Snatch Game is the drag version of this, with celebrity impressions.

Best of the Week: March 5-9, 2012

At (Cult)ure we're in the business of producing written words, but that doesn't mean that we don't enjoy things like spoken words or words set to music or things that don't have words at all. So each week we'll bring you a small collection of non-written things that we enjoyed.

Best Podcast:  The Sporkful, Call In Smorgasbord: Grizzly Dan and PB and Honey

The fine gentlemen over at The Sporkful were recently invited to judge the granola-off over on Slate's Culture Gabfest, and I've been diving into their back catalogue ever since. Though I nearly gave this spot to the more recent episode, "Chili," it was ultimately the presence of "Sarah from Ottawa" in the Call In Smorgasbord that won out. Sarah has some very, very strong feelings about day-old pop corn. There's an unfortunate, repeated mispronunciation of the French macaron in the call that follows. If only they'd kept the Canadian on the line.

Chad Michaels channels Cher

Last week, there was some drama between Sharon Needles and Phi Phi O'Hara. The Princess was (rightly) sent home.

There is some brief chatter before the mini-challenge where Phi Phi is a bitch to Sharon Needles again. If she is going to choose a dog's name, I am going to make references to her as such.

Glamazons vs. Champions

Last week, adorably dumb LaShauwn Beyond was sent home for his lack of confidence on the mainstage and because Billy B. hated him. Lame. But he wasn't going to make it very far.

SheMail arrives and Ms. Ru is talking about all of her songs like "Covergirl," and "Glamazon". Mr. Ru shares a video of a fan of Ru's named Piyah Martell who was born without legs. The queens are touched by her story and have to create a butterfly-inspired headress in her honour. They are varying degrees of fabulous, with Latrice Royale and Milan's number not even staying on the mannequin head. Phi Phi, Kenya and Jiggly take the win. Phi Phi and Kenya win a coin toss to be team captains.

Punisher War ZoneSo it turns out that we don't have to feel guilty about loving those super-violent action movies anymore, as research shows they may actually prevent, rather than encourage, real-world violence.
Read it here, in Foreign Policy:  "violent movies deter almost 1,000 assaults on an average weekend in the United States".

Good news for me, since my romantic Valentines Day viewing was Punisher: War Zone, and I wasn't planning on going on a killing spree anytime soon...

RuPaul, John Salley, and Rick FoxRuPaul's Drag Race: Wrestling's Trashiest Fighters

Last week, a RuPocalypse gave us creepy looks from Sharon Needles and not really anyone else. Jiggly Caliente was given a second chance, while recent DUI-recoveree Alisa Summers was sent sashaying away. We will not miss her.

One second is spent mourning the loss of Alisa and discussing how Lashauwn needs to speak up before SheMail arrives. It is cryptic, as always, and then Mr. Ru gives them this week's mini challenge. The girls get 30 minutes to sculpt an ass out of various padding materials. The results are ridiculous, and all of their new butts are like lumpy and stuff.

Jiggly Caliente awaits her fateRupocolypse Now

Oh boy. We are back, people, and the most fabulous hour of reality television is with us. It is season four of RuPaul's drag race, and I am so happy to be recapping it again for you. If you are new to the show or to my recaps, welcome. This show gives us reality TV at its very best, a unique look at a bizarre world filled with larger-than-life characters. 13 drag queens compete to become "America's Next Drag Superstar", and this is evaluated based on four criteria. Charisma. Uniqueness. Nerve. Talent. The ladies enter one at a time and size each other up. My first impression reactions of each of them are below.

Willam: Willam starts off by telling us how she is an actor and has been on Sex and the City (or perhaps it is the movie, I don't know). She makes a point of saying he didn't come up through the club system, so she is a bit of an outsider. She really has a lot to say about herself, and I am guessing she will clash with some people. She is a very pretty lady.

Best Podcast: Q, Daniel Radcliffe

Maybe it's a little obvious to talk about how charming and adorable Daniel Radcliffe is (except that, honestly,  Inside the Actor's Studio is the only other interview of his I have ever seen/heard), but I declare that you have a flinty heart if you don't smile at his aspiration to one day dig up bits of flint in Surrey.
