"It wasn't until I saw Jan Matejko's King Sobieski at Vienna (1883), a massive war painting in the Vatican, that I decided to work in direct opposition to the more prosaic process of making that I was seeing in some contemporary art. I decided to produce paintings that were skilful, decadent and ostentatious. My idea was to revisit the exhilarating language of history painting.
