Yikes! All of the couples are in frightening costumes in honour of this spookiest of evenings. Tom introduces himself as Tom Boooogeron, which is awesome. Brooke is wearing a dumb black wig. I can't believe we are down to the top 6, and I can't believe Nancy Grace is among them.
Last week, Chaz was finally sent home, probably two weeks later than he should have been. I loved his effort, and he is a really interesting person, but he wasn't a good dancer.
David Arquette and Kym (Cha Cha Cha): These two are doing a dracula-themed cha cha that uses magic too. Fun stuff. It starts off a bit lame, because the clip package promised that David would be doing some cool magic. There are some other cool effects in the dance, though. Like when fringe on Kym's dress just appears while she is spinning, and when a spider web appears at the end. The dance itself is ok. For David, it is pretty controlled, but also fairly uneven. Len thought it was very fun and original. Bruno says David was a natural at turning tricks. Carrie Ann thinks David's improvement has been phenomenal. Ah…they reveal in the Brooke interview that the trick we were supposed to see got lost backstage before the routine. How sad. Scores: 8,8,8.
J.R. Martinez and Karina (Tango): This dance is in a Ghostbusters theme, which Karina thinks is a bit tough because Ghostbusters is goofy and silly and the tango is not. They really went all out on the sets this week, which is nice to see. As far as I can tell, J.R. nails the technique as always. It just isn't as fun as it could be, but I am not sure what is missing. Bruno thinks he was bewitching, but that he lost the timing a few times. Carrie Ann thinks they got the tone of the song perfectly, in spite of a slip up. Len thinks it was a bit disappointing because J.R. has been so good lately (I agree). He also thinks J.R. was concentrating on the "razz-a-mattaz". I love a fussy Brit. Scores: 9,8,8.
Nancy and Tristan (Jive): Tristan really outshines Nancy in this dance. She seems to sort of not know the dance very well or something. It totally lacks energy on her part. It is boring, and Nancy just really doesn't do well with the steps. The Peanut Gallery is also sick of seeing so much of Nancy's ham hocks. Carrie Ann thinks she lost the choreography and it wasn't great. Len thinks this dance didn't suit her and her technique wasn't good. Bruno thinks that either the devil got her, or her shoes were too small. Scores: 7,7,7.
Rob Kardashian and Cheryl (Tango): The theme for this dance is The Addams Family with Rob as Gomez. This has the potential to be fun. The theme of this one fits much better than J.R.'s Ghostbusters thing. Cheryl choreographs a fun routine, but it feels a bit frantic at times. LIke Rob is counting and desperately trying to keep up with the steps. For the most part, he pulls it off. Len thinks his footwork was really good, and he attacked it. Bruno thinks he was manly and in control. Carrie Ann says it was Rob's best dance so far. Scores: 9,8,8.
Ricki Lake and Derek (Paso Doble): The story for Ricki this week is an injury that she got in the past week. It is some sort of nerve problem near her ribs that is painful. The doctor says she should stop, but she obviously isn't going to. The theme for this dance is Little Red Riding Hood. The dance is pretty good, but I do feel like Ricki could be a little more intense and strong in her movement. The audience goes bonkers for it. Bruno calls it a blizzard of passion and fear, and thinks it was incredible. Carrie Ann thinks her shapes were amazing, but she has to watch that her shoulders don't hunch up too much. Len loved the "whip in, and wait" of her Paso. Scores: 9,9,9.
Hope and Maks (Samba): There is a strange assortment of dances tonight. Kind of one of everything, but then two tangoes? Very odd. So last week, Maks was a dick to people. He is the worst. He is injured and brings in one of the pro troupe people, and Hope really likes the new pro better. She has a great time with him, and it is pretty funny. Maks is dressed like some sort of wolf-man, and he looks really frightening. Hope is just not improving in her dance at all. She isn't precise with her movements, and her body is just sort of too floppy all the time. This samba doesn't really look like one at all, it just isn't great. Standing O from the audience, but they might be drunk. Carrie Ann liked Hope's brightness and lightness. Len thinks she coped well with a very difficult dance, and liked all of the elements of the performance. Bruno thinks she had better timing, placement and finish. I think the judges are on eggshells a bit for these two. It wasn't very good. Maks is notably silent, both here and in his Brooketerview. Scores: 8,8,8.
Team Dances - These scores will be added to the totals from the individual marks.
Team Tango (J.R., David, and Nancy): Nancy is clearly the weak link here. J.R. hasn't done the tango yet, so David is teaching him a few things. The routine has an insane asylum theme, which is fun. It is unfortunate for Nancy that she is dancing right next to two female pros in Kym and Karina, because she just really pales in comparison. David does a reasonable job with his solo, and J.R. nails it, as usual. The routine is fun overall, and the styling of the whole thing is fun and creepy. Len says that the individual portions were all terrible, but the group part was great. The other two judges echo that sentiment. Scores: 8,7,8.
Team Paso Doble (Ricki, Rob, and Hope): In the rehearsals, everyone watches Hope and Maks bicker and it seems super awkward. Derek is super nice and steps in to show Hope how to do something when Maks storms out of the studio. He is really coming off poorly this season. Cheryl also appears to help Hope out. Rob's solo is pretty strong, and he does knee-walking, which the Peanut Gallery has a particular weakness for. Hope's solo (hahahahahahhaha, get it?) is really weak. She has no frame! Ricki's is quite good, even though much of it is just her riding Derek across the floor, cape style. Bruno loved it, and thought they all went for it. Carrie Ann thought it was amazing all-around. Len thought their individual parts were great. Scores: 9,8,9.
More Scaaaaaaaary Stuff:
- Random Celebrity Sightings: Doris Roberts is for sure in the audience. I spotted her just over Tom's shoulder in one shot. Also the Peanut Gallery spotted Jason Biggs (he of the early 2000s classics like American Pie. I didn't remember who that was either). The Cox-Arquette clan also makes their standard appearance.
- I really hope that it is Nancy going home this week, but I wouldn't be too broken up about Hope leaving either, just because she doesn't seem to be having fun and I am done with Maks. I am worried that David might be in trouble, just because their group dance was not so good.
- I don't know if you are keeping track, but this recap is for real on time. You are welcome.
- Happy Halloween!
