DWTS: 80s Week!
Last week, Chynna completely forgot her routine, and was sent home. She was a decent dancer, but I think she just had relatively few fans to keep her in it. It is surprising again that she went before Chaz, Carson, and Nancy, just because they are clearly weaker dancers. That being said, she did completely forget her routine.
This week is 80s week at DWTS, and we get a rendition of "Eternal Flame" by, I assume, whoever sings that song. My favourite version of the song is sung by Kristin Chenowith to the Piemaker in Pushing Daisies. Ahh, apparently these are The Bangles. Sorry, people, I know really nothing about music. Can you tell?
Hope and Maks (Tango): Hope is wearing a pretty awesome red patent leather matrix coat. Their tango is a bit off for some reason. Hope kind of looks like a rubber band that Maks is just pulling around the dance floor. She isn't stiff enough through her torso or something. Len agrees with me, and says that she was too willowy and loose. He did like the aggression. Bruno liked her 80s super bitch routine. Carrie Ann thinks she was a little too strong sometimes, and it made her lose her lines. Scores: 8,8,8.
Carson and Anna (Jive): Carson really seems to be trying hard, and I appreciate it. He knows he isn't a great dancer, but he puts it all out there. This jive is a neon cheerleader mess, and Carson is as clowny as ever. His fellow competitors just love him, as does the audience. Bruno thinks it was loopy, wacky fun, and a crowning achievement in madness. Carrie Ann thinks it was super fun, but there was really no technique. Len thinks he had tons of heart, but it wasn't enough. Scores: 6,6,7. The judges seemed to decide this was the week to do something about crappier dancers staying while good ones go home.
Nancy and Tristan (Rumba): It doesn't seem like this is a dance that plays to Nancy's strengths. Which are….being mean on TV, having a terrifying haircut? She isn't flowy and graceful. And good lord, she really isn't personable. I just want her to fail. In the clip package, we get to see Nancy when she was in college in the 80s, and she is super pretty. She looks a lot like Gilda Radner. The rumba starts, and it is ok. It kind of looks more like a waltz or something, with how much they are in a traditional hold. And it is boring, of course. Carrie Ann thinks it was nice and appropriate, and wants to see real passion. She calls the dance drab. I agree. Len thinks it was simple, but effective. Bruno liked her attitude and thought it was one of her best performances. Scores: 7,7,8
J.R. and Karina (Samba): Apparently the samba is really tough for dudes, so we'll see how J.R. (who seems to be good at most of the dances) does. J.R. has latin roots, so perhaps he will be able to rock it. His hip action is certainly way better than most of the men we have seen do this dance. He manages to shake it in the right way, and keeps up the rhythm of the dance throughout. I think the judges are going to like it. Len is fully clapping, which is a good sign. Len thinks J.R. was great and performed it excellently. Bruno calls him a sex machine and brilliant. Carrie Ann is hot and bothered, and wants to see more of it. Scores: 9,9,10.
Rob and Cheryl (Rumba): Most of the clip package focuses on how Rob needs to be sexier with Cheryl, which seems tough for them because Cheryl is such a tough teacher, it's not like he has thought of her this way before. In the routine, he does seem to grope her appropriately. This is why Cheryl is the best. She always knows exactly what needs to be done to impress with the dance. She knew that if they couldn't sell the sex here, it wouldn't work. Rob, for his part, does really well with the steps and the mood of the dance. Bruno calls Rob a heartthrob, and commends his emotional connection to Cheryl. Carrie Ann thinks Rob was really strong and is improving bit by bit every week. Len thinks he pulled off the masculine routine, and commanded the dance. Scores: 9,8,8
Chaz and Lacey (Samba): It seems like Chaz is consistently in the late part of the show. It seems like a bit of an advantage for him, but also signals that he is quite a bit ratings draw. Actually the same goes for Ricki. Having to follow J.R.'s samba must be intimidating. Especially for Chaz. Lacey brings her cute dad to rehearsal, and he is shaped like a cartoon southern politician. He is a dance coach, and helps Chaz learn about how big dudes can shake it. He is super friendly and adorable. The dance starts, and Chaz really isn't too bad. He has sort of the male version of a nip slip, where the zipper on his pants seems to be down, and we can see the bright turquoise shirt that is tucked into his pants poking out sometimes. It is mostly distracting. Carrie Ann loved the content and thought he was super confident. Len thought he had the feel of the dance, though it lacked some content. Bruno babbles incoherently. I think he said it was good, but no J.R.. Scores: 7,7,7
David and Kym (Tango): After David's strong paso last week, the tango seems like it should be fairly good to him. As Carrie Ann points out, the tango is just the ballroom version of the paso doble. David's wardrobe has him looking like Jeff's Cool Cat character from Community. Sans glitter halo, of course. The dance is quite good. It is a little slow in places, but David keeps up the intensity through his character. There are some cool kicks that get a bit lost in Kym's long dress, but it is pretty good overall. Len thinks it had a great 80s feel, and thought it was fantastic. Bruno thinks it was badass. Carrie Ann thinks it was fun, but he could work on his musicality. Scores: 8,9,8.
Ricki and Derek (Foxtrot): Ricki has some hilarious 80s hair. Kind of a lady mullet. Derek has a bit of a Flock of Seagulls hair do, which is fun. Ricki tells us that in the 80s, she was mostly eating. I like her self-depricating humour. Jon Waters shows up to their rehearsal, and he seems like a really sweet guy. The foxtrot is such a boring dance. Derek does his best to choreograph something fun, but it just isn't a fun style. Ricki does well, as usual. I think her technique is good and she is great with the character, again, as usual. I like that Ricki combines the fun celebrity side of things with actual dancing skills. Bruno didn't like the running man segment, and thought it was a bit off. Carrie Ann loves their teamwork, but thought they didn't need the Roger Rabbit. Len didn't love the funk, and didn't think they had a good hold either. Scores: 8,8,8. I have a sneaking suspicion that Derek purposely choreographed something a bit crappy so that Ricki would have something to improve from after the 10s last week.
