Eric NorthmanBlair WaldorfI cannot believe this didn't occur to me sooner. Normally I like my pop culture worlds to remains discrete (e.g. I don't spend a lot of time wondering what would happen if we got Edward some TruBlood because: Bill), but in last night's episode of True Blood (this season's penultimate), Eric did something that I knew I had seen somewhere before. To wit:

Blair's expression, while not moving in any way, somehow becomes totally terrifying. It is one of the greatest parts of this or any other episode.

That's from Jacob's recap of The Ex Files, season 2, episode 4 of Gossip Girl.

You see, Bill and Eric were having their latest Sookie-based confrontation outside of Queen SophieAnne's (her solution to their problem is to have sex and let her watch because she is Queen of Great Ideas in addition to Louisiana), and as Eric was fixing his hair and Bill was threatening to tell Her Majesty about Eric's V-selling, Eric simply stopped and his expression, while not moving in any way, somehow became totally terrifying.

Blair's always terrifying when she's not moving because Blair would live in a centrifuge if she could (everything getting spun around and pulled apart is, like, her raison d'être), whereas Eric has cultivated a more languid air. You would think that would make him a closer cousin to Chuck Bass (and there are similarities there), but he's totally Blair Waldorf. Blair's father leaving caused whatever fragile grasp she had on sanity and decency to snap, and I am sure that Godric's suicide/euthanasia will do the same for Eric (sanity and decency being more relative terms for our Viking). In the meantime he's going to go around threatening old friends and generally wreaking havoc in the name of making everything better.

Oh, Eric. Now I can see why I love/hate you the most. Plus, you can fly!
