Supernatural: Glad We Got That Out of the Way

Last night, Dean and Sam retrieved the Colt, so Dean walked right up to the Devil and shot him in the head. Didn't take. Turns out that there five things in Creation the Colt can't kill, and Lucifer is one of them.

While it doesn't address why killing the Devil is such a great idea to begin with, it does mean we can (hopefully) move on to actually making a plan re: Armageddon instead of having the writers dropping big reveals and then ignoring the impending doom to concentrate on well acted but superfluous episodes.

If there's one thing the Supernatural writers do well, though, it's keep consistent. No, really. Every time Lucifer tries to get someone on his side, he sticks to his "The Devil: He's Just Like Us!" tack. Wants Nick to host him? Tells him that they're both after revenge against the God who let them down. Wants Castiel to join him? They've both rebelled against Heaven! Wants Sam as his meat suit? They're both just put upon little brothers. It doesn't always work, but Mark Pellegrino's restrained performance sells it every time.

Unfortunately, the writers were consistent on another stance last night. A stance best known as, "Women: We Don't Like 'Em." When Jo held her own in a demon fight early in the episode, I was a little disconcerted. But when she laughingly turned Dean down for sex, explaining that she'd rather have her self-respect, I thought, "Uh-oh. When did Jo get awesome?" Sure enough, Jo saved Dean from a hell hound but get herself torn up in the process. Knowing that she would die, she volunteered to stay behind and set off a bomb that would give Sam and Dean a chance to escape. The endlessly fabulous Ellen Harvelle, Jo's bitchin' mom, made the sacrifice to stay behind with her daughter, which is just as well, as Jo died before she could push the trigger. Ellen, being the aftermentioned fabulous and bitchin', went out in a blaze of glory. You know, except for the part where shooting the Devil didn't take.

With the death of the ladies Harvelle, that brings us back down to exactly two recurring female characters: Becky, Sam and Dean's deranged biggest fan, and Meg, a demon out to kill them. Can we bring back Missouri? I bet she would bitch slap the Devil right back to Hell.

Also, if the writers want to put Crowley in every episode, that would be just fine by me. Mark Sheppard brought a healthy dose of awesome.
