Last Thursday's episode, "The Devil You Know," was a lot of set up for the finale and very little in the way of anything else, which is just as well. We also decided to go back and dredge up some shit from the series première for reasons quite beyond me. Jessica's death has been dealt with, show. Let it go.

The Good Stuff (a.k.a. The Crowley Stuff)

Seems Crowley's on pretty much everyone's hit list after he turned over the Colt to the Brothers Winchester, so he offers up his services to help track down the remaining Horsemen. Since Sam and Dean are on a goose chase anyway, they agree. Crowley helps them kidnap Brady (Eric Johnson, a.k.a Smallville's Whitney), a sort of stable boy to Horsemen whose been working on distributing the Croatoan virus as a vaccine against swine flu (passé?). Anyway, Crowley and Dean kidnap Brady. Crowley tries to get Brady to cut a deal, but Brady already knows the score: he'll die if/when Lucifer comes to power, but that's better than the torture a traitor like Crowley will no doubt endure.

Crowley, however, is indeed a master negotiator. He leaves the boys, telling them that he's off to "kick open a demon's nest" and returns with suit all mussed. Yup, he told all the demons he could find that he and Brady are "lovers in league against Satan." Realizing that he is now completely screwed, Brady gives up Pestilence's location, and everyone skedaddles before the hell hounds can rip them apart.

Crowley then appears in South Dakota to tempt Bobby into selling his soul in return for Death's location. You see, while neither Crowley nor Brady know where to find Death, the information will magically come to him if it's part of a crossroads deal. Bobby, of course, thinks this deal is better sealed with a couple of rounds of rock salt than a kiss but seems to reconsider when Crowley reasonably points out that they have no other plays. At any rate, he claims he can give Bobby's soul "right back." In completely unrelated news, Bobby's beard looked more lush than usual. I doubt it means anything.

The Bad Stuff

Brady, it seems, is an old college friend of Sammy's who's been jacked up with demon since the second semester of their sophomore year. Yes, even back in those days Azazel worried that Sam -- his favourite -- was going soft and sent Demon Brady to keep an eye on Sam. Sam's pissed that Demon Brady set him up with Jessica and furious when Demon Brady reveals that he didn't just set them up: he also killed Jess, setting the entire show's plot in motion. While Crowley's out kicking open a demon nest, Sam locks Dean in a closet, so he can just go ahead and kill Demon Brady, but thinks the better of it. After the deal, Sam and Dean trap Demon Brady in an alley via rock salt, so Sam can shiv him but good. Just prior to getting shived but good, Demon Brady yells a bunch of crap about how Sam is essentially a demon or something. I don't know. It didn't make any sense, so I sort of stopped listening. Yeah, yeah, Sam's got anger. Whatever. I still don't see how that relates to taking the Lucifer plunge even though the show sure as hell seems to think I should.

Oh, and a Slightly Sauced College Boy calls up a Slightly Sauced Bobby to discuss the possibility that Sam would be able to physically force Lucifer back into his cage after handing over his fine ass to the Devil. Even slightly sauced, Bobby thinks that's a dumb idea. Sam points out that Bobby got control of a demon, to which Bobby counters that that was one little demon and not, you know, the most powerful fallen angel. Absolutely no one brings up that time John got control over Azazel, which is just as well, as John is an epic tool.

Next time: Looks like Dean goes after Death on his own, so I guess Sam goes after Pestilence? Also, more Crowley, possibly some Castiel. Also also, no one makes Sam get a haircut. *Sigh*
