JAKOB DYLAN Women and Country www.jacobdylan.com Dist: Sony Music Canada "I knew going into this record that I wanted to hear something full and vibrant," says singer-songwriter Jakob Dylan of Women and Country. "I wanted horns and fiddle, for it to be as big and beautiful sounding as it could with instrumentation. That changes the lyrics and tone of what you're writing." Recorded in Los Angeles in May of 2009 and produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett, Women and Country marks Dylan's second solo effort. He says he was pleased to enlist Burnett, both because the two have a longstanding friendship and because Dylan describes the producer as a musical "historian" with an unparalleled depth and breadth of knowledge when it comes to blues, folk and rock 'n' roll. The album also features backup vocals by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, whose help Dylan enlisted to enrich the album with a different personality on 8 of its 11 tracks. (For his upcoming tour, Dylan will be accompanied by Case's backing band; Case will appear on select dates as well.) In Toronto Chin was a founding member of the ground-breaking group Bass is Base - a Juno award-winning group that paved the way for many urban artists. As a recipient of a songwriter of the year Socan award and a Much Music Video Award, Chin has established himself as a mainstay in Canada as both an artist and producer. As a singer-songwriter he is creating a new beginning for himself. Within his heavy production and work schedule Chin has found time to complete a solo album called D'tach in a genre he calls “Urban Folk.” Sonically, D'tach is quite a departure from the music that Chin's name is currently attached to. However the one constant that remains is a focus on crafting quality music and songs. With a stripped down sound on this record Chin explains “I detached from everything, separated myself, cut off the strings” TRACKLISTING: ROBYN HITCHCOCK & THE VENUS 3Propellor Time Dist: F.A.B. Over the past three decades, ROBYN HITCHCOCK has amassed an extensive and distinguished body of work that has established him as one of rock music's most respected and beloved iconoclasts. A musician's musician, and still criminally underexposed despite a long history of critical appreciation, Hitchcock's vivid surrealist song craft has over the years earned him a devout international fan base. Recorded at home over the Summer of 2006 and beyond, Propellor Time is no single-handed effort: The Venus 3, Hitchcock?s backing band for this recording boasts the rhythm section of Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows) on bass and Bill Rieflin (formerly of Ministry and Revolting Cocks) on drums. Making a rare appearance as a sideman outside his usual group, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck (on 12 string and acoustic guitars) completes this esteemed line-up. Additionally, a star-studded array of illustrious guest musicians collaborate with Hitchcock here; selected tracks feature contributions from John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin/Them Crooked Vultures), Johnny Marr (The Smiths/Modest Mouse), Nick Lowe; and former Soft Boy/Egyptian band mate Morris Windsor, among many other notables.TRACKLISTING: JEFF HEALEYLast Call www.jeffhealey.com Dist: Warner Music Canada Jeff Healey gained worldwide fame as a stunningly original rock/blues guitarist. His passion, however, was the infectious and joyful music from the classic jazz era—the days when Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke ruled the music world. These stripped-down Solo, Duo and Trio last sessions that make up Last Call could be titled “The Real Jeff Healey.” He is joined by Drew Jurecka (violin) and Ross Wooldridge(piano, clarinet). The material Jeff chose to record for his final jazz/swing disc shows his love for all musical styles-featuring some of his best playing and soulful singing.TRACKLISTING: WHEN YOU'RE STRANGESongs From The Motion Picture whenyourestrangemovie.com Dist: Warner Music Canada The feature length documentary When You’re Strange: A Film About The Doors uses historic and previously unseen footage shot between the band’s 1965 formation and Morrison’s 1971 death. Prominent Melbourne musician Nicky Bomba (drums and percussion) of ‘Bomba’ fame and principal drummer on ‘Sunrise Over Sea’ joined the band and bass player Byron Luiters from Sydney outfit Ray Mann Three completed the new line up. John Butler comments on the forthcoming new album April Uprising, “The whole rehearsal and recording process so far has been a lot of fun and very gratifying. I feel the sounds and general spirit and energy of this album are best summed up in the words – free, melodic, funky, phat and rocking. There’s definitely a certain attitude that comes across on the album. Perhaps there’s a conviction, in a song writing and production sense, that I haven’t tapped into so much on earlier works that seems to be more prevalent on April Uprising. There’s chemistry and language that Nicky, Byron and I have found that really compliments these songs in all their different facets”.TRACKLISTING: MISHKATalk About http://www.mishka.com/ Dist: Fontana North Born to a Bermudian father and Canadian mother, Mishka is bringing his brand of soulful roots-reggae to the masses with the release of his fourth full-length album Talk About. Mishka is an authentic musician in an underrepresented genre with an incredible story—from growing up on a boat in Bermuda to having one of film’s most iconic figures, Matthew McConaughey, start his own record label (j.k. livin’ Records) exclusively for his music. Mishka's 2009 release, “Above the Bones,” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Reggae Charts, and Mishka was named 2009’s Best New Artist by iTunes in the Singer/Songwriter category. The album, who's title has nearly unanimously topped the music press' "2010 Most Anticipated" lists, sees them choose a heavier direction while simultaneously able to exercise, and paralyze, many other blissfully unexpected options. Their previous work has been praised universally by press worldwide with the New York Times calling it "extreme musical craft" and Alternative Press stating that, "the sound they pioneered (is) only getting stronger." With this single output, the band's fourth album, this intensely innovative unit will once again rearrange and redirect the possibilities in music.TRACKLISTING: YOAVA Foolproof Escape Plan http://www.myspace.com/yoavmusic Dist: Fontana North Singer-songwriter Yoav’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, A Foolproof Escape Plan was written in London, South Africa, and Venice Beach with a collection of international musicians and artists, and produced by the outstanding Joey Waronker—the American drummer and producer known for his work with Thom Yorke, Beck, Smashing Pumpkins, and R.E.M. The result is an honest and introspective album, brimming with Yoav’s signature, near-impossible to define sound that mixes a progressive acoustic style fused with an electronic aesthetic and a mindful nod to DJ culture. The songs on A Foolproof Escape Plan reflect Yoav’s experiences and his connection to current global issues, but this is also a highly personal record. Lead single Yellowbrite Smile speaks of the selling of distraction and the commercialization of happiness. OCEAN COLOUR SCENESaturday www.oceancolourscene.com Dist: E1 2010 release from the British band, their ninth album overall. The album marks the 21st anniversary of their formation. After touring with Oasis in 1995 and chart success with Moseley Shoals, Ocean Colour Scene continued to release new material as well as a stem of successful live albums. Saturday continues with the band's brand of retro orientated Rock and was recorded at the iconic Rockfield Studios.TRACKLISTING: SHARON JONES AND THE DAP KINGSI Learned The Hard Way www.sharonjonesandthedapkings.com Dist: Fontana North Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, this record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style “Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest. MURDER BY DEATHGood Morning Magpie www.murderbydeath.com Dist: Universal Music Canada Bloomington, Indiana’s Murder By Death releases their 5th full-length studio album, Good Morning, Magpie. The quartet self-produced the albumwhich was recorded at Bloomington-based Farm Fresh Studios and the resulting ten tracks were mixed by Trina Shoemaker (Queens of the Stone Age, Sheryl Crow, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith). Roots that reach far beyond her West African homeland of Benin, because the Grammy award winning singer, dancer and songwriter Kidjo is a definitive 21st century world artist. Her art roves across boundaries, genres and ethnicities, finding the connections that link musical forms from every part of the world, while still bonding closely with her own traditions. The songs on Oyo embrace rhythm & blues, soul music, jazz, and Beninese melodies, as well as four of her own original works. Featuring her unique interpretations of songs from artists as diverse as James Brown, Otis Redding, Miriam Makeba and Santana, and including guests John Legend, Roy Hargrove, and Dianne Reeves, Oyo is a truly diverse collection reflecting the music that inspired Angelique growing up. TRACKLISTING: HARLEMHippies www.myspace.com/harlemduh Dist: Select Hippies is the second long-player from Austin's newest Matador signings, Harlem. As demonstrated by numerous self-booked tours including stints at SXSW and CMJ, Harlem have a reputation of making club gigs seem like living room shows (and living room shows feel like club shows). Their first album for Matador, Hippies, harnesses the band’s energy in its 16 blasts of pure pop energy with a new dimension of songwriting that is as tightly masterful as it is true to a joyfully frantic primitivism. Recorded at the Distillery in Costa Mesa, CA with the assistance of Mike McHugh, Hippies is a more refined and cleaner record than it's predecessor (the self released Free Drugs) with a classically iconoclastic sound that in eras-past was achieved by The Gories, The Standells, Dead Moon, The Kinks and The Pixies. JONSIGo www.jonsi.com Dist: Select Go is the debut solo release from Sigur Rós frontman, Jónsi. The choice to make an album of solo recordings came together as a solution to a backlog of songs Jónsi had written that didn’t seem to fit within the Sigur Rós context. Go is a different beast entirely. Ecstatic, dramatic and alive, it features Jónsi’s signature vocals throughout, with the majority of the songs sung in English. A video for lead track, "Go Do", has been completed and is streaming now at www.jonsi.com. The clip is directed by Arni & Kinski, who have helmed no less than six Sigur Rós videos, including Glósóli and Viðrar vel til loftárása and was filmed on location in Iceland between Christmas and New Year. GBHPerfume And Piss www.myspace.com/gbh Dist: F.A.B. There isn't a self-respecting gutter punk, hardcore kid or sub-cultural miscreant alive who hasn't seen the iconic GBH logo emblazoned on the back of a leather jacket, a denim vest, or a torn-up t-shirt, and after 30 years in the game, England’s original punks GBH are back to reclaim the streets with a brand new riotous release, Perfume and Piss. Barn-burning, fist-pumping, palace-gates-storming tracks like "Kids Get Down," "Cadillac One" and "This is Not the Real World" carry the torch forward with the band's trademark fury that is nihilistic, optimistic, pessimistic, anarchistic, violent, humorous and deadly serious all at once. Get into the band that started it all!! DR. DOGShame, Shame d.drdogmusic.com Dist: F.A.B. “There was this feeling inside me going into making this record that we’d never made an album before,” says guitarist/vocalist Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog’s Shame, Shame, their Anti- debut and the first album made outside the safe confines of their home studio. Having evolved from a band whose primary creative outlet was the album-making process into one that favored the energy of their live performances, they knew they wanted to document the new dynamic they had developed on the road. Producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) was brought in to help peel back the intricate arrangements of last album Fate to reveal the raw immediacy of a tight five-man unit honing their craft. Shame, Shame is an album whose dark themes are soothed by bright harmonies, taut guitar riffs, and soaring melodies. Shame, Shame is the release that will announce Dr. Dog to a wider world, a world waiting for the timeless songwriting and melodies of their finest album.
