OPEN FORMAT is a monthly series presenting a changing roster of secret DJs mixing together music they love, freely an regardless of genre. It takes place the 3rd Friday of each month, from 9:00pm to 1:00am, beginning January 2011 at Shanghai Restaurant (651 Somerset Street West, Ottawa). It is free but by donation, with the DJs of each night directing all monies to people and/or places in our communities where it may be helpful. February 20th – This Way of Life (2010, dir Thomas Burstyn, New Zealand) Filmed in the stunning beauty of New Zealand's rugged Ruahine Mountains by veteran cinematographer and ex-Montrealer Thomas Burstyn, this documentary follows the unusual family of Peter Karena and his wife, Colleen, as they raise their half-wild brood of six kids, trying to eke out a different kind of life for themselves. Peter can tame a wild horse, or field dress a deer, but he can't seem to find a home for his family amidst an escalating struggle with his own father. Shortlisted for the Best Documentary Oscar. The Dusty Owl Reading Series, for the next couple of months, will be featuring special guest-hosts in place of Steve Zytveld, as we support his ongoing schooling at St. Paul's University. Learning is good! And note the temporary shift in venue from Swizzles on Queen Street to the upstairs of The Carleton Tavern in the Parkdale Market (watch for Dusty Owls anniversary party and new venue announcement coming up in May, alongside Dusty Owls fifteenth anniversary!); The next two events at the Dusty Owl Reading Series are: 1) Sunday, February 20, 2011 20 February Christian McPherson 5pm with featured performer(s) and open stage by 6; Christian McPherson is the author of "Six Ways to Sunday" (shortlisted for the 2008 ReLit Awards), "Poems that swim from my brain like rats leaving a sinking ship," and his new novel "The Cube People." His new collection of poems "The Sun Has Forgotten Where I Live" is being launched at Collected Works on April 16th, 2011. He lives in Ottawa with his wife Marty and his two kids, Molly and Henry. 2) Sunday, March 6, 2011 Ottawa poet Sean Moreland with Call Me Katie Sean Moreland's poetry and short fiction has appeared in venues including The Bywords Quarterly Journal and the Malahat Review, and online in The Puritan, Experiment-O, bywords.ca and ditch,. He won the John Newlove award in 2007, and was named one of Ottawa's Hot Voices in 2009. He co-organizes the blUe m0nday reading series and sits on the editorial board for Arc Poetry Magazine. He earned his Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Ottawa, where he currently teaches. His research interests include Gothic fiction, horror fiction and film, modern American fiction, and (post)modern poetics. followed by a musical performance by fan-favourites, Call Me Katie! Arteast Artists ( http://www.arteastottawa.com/trinity.html) celebrate "A Night at the Theatre" Feb. 17 - March 22, 2011. Visit the Trinity Gallery, Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Boulevard, Ground Floor. Arteast members have been encouraged to capture the visual interpretations and beauty of theatre for this juried exhibition. The public is invited to an opening reception for this latest juried show. PHENOMENA Curator's Talk, Sunday Feb. 20, 3 p.m. Cube Gallery invites you to take part in a discussion about Phenomena: a group show exploring the climatological, astronomical and geological events wrought by weather, acts of nature and feats of the gods.
Curator Don Monet will speak about the impetus behind building this show, while several of the artists will also be in attendance to discuss what inspired them to interpret Phenomena through their work. So far we have booked Andrew O'Malley and Reid McLachlan. Eight artists working on the curated theme of Phenomena. Phenomena is a group show exploring the climatological, astronomical and geological events that can leave us awestruck, dumbfounded or sometimes cowering in our beds. Don't miss this inspiring show by eight artists as they interpret and reflect on the beauty of those divine occurrences whether they are bolts of lightning, shooting stars or startling fissures in the terra firma beneath our feet.
