We have resorted to verbalizing why we feel a certain way, but perhaps the unconscious is better served by a more direct form of translation. Alex Mehiri uses his brush to unravel his emotions, to express himself and discover that which lies beneath. His bright colouration, thick impasto and wonderful composition reveal a complex character with a lyrical soul. Come discover the inner world of Alex Mehiri, and meet the artist in person as well. -Christina Anastassopoulos, 2010 -- The National Arts Centre Orchestra’s fifth 2010-2011 Bostonian Bravo Series concert highlights Dvorák’s popular “From the New World” Symphony as well as the return of violin virtuoso Sarah Chang. The fifth Bostonian Bravo concert of the season – entitled Dvorák’s “New World” – will be performed on Thursday January 20 and Friday January 21 at 8 p.m. in Southam Hall. These concerts feature acclaimed Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård as well as violin superstar Sarah Chang. Both Mr. Søndergård and Ms Chang will join CBC Radio’s Alan Neal for a post-concert chat onstage. Jesse Stewart is a composer, percussionist, improviser, instrument builder, and visual artist. He is also a professor of music composition in Carleton University's School for Studies in Art and Culture. His solo concert will incorporate improvised gestures and percussive sound in dialogue with David Rokeby's “Very Nervous System,” an interactive media-based sound sculpture that translates movement into sound. Stewart has performed with many internationally acclaimed musicians, and is currently a member of the David Mott Quintet and Tallboys. He also leads his own groups and performs regularly as a soloist to rave reviews at festivals across Canada. -- Entering a remarkable fourth decade of performances, this word-renowned team explores some of the musical gems in the vast range of the two-piano repertoire. Works by Arensky, Brahms, Dvorák and Rachmaninoff. The concert takes place at Almonte Old Town Hall (14 Bridge Street, Almonte) and begins at 8:00 p.m. That two pianists can produce a virtually seamless sound, over this many years, gives cause to marvel. The critics certainly have. As The Ottawa Citizen duly noted, "Anagnoson and Kinton's playing is everything that duo-piano playing should be." This legendary duo has enchanted audiences throughout Canada, United States, Europe, and China.
