Many Guises: Contemporary Self-Portraits
Curator’s talk in the exhibition with Judith Parker. | Friday October 29 at 12:00 noon. | Free admission.
This exhibition presents six Ottawa/Gatineau artists gathered under the curatorial theme of the self-portrait expressed as a dual-image photograph. Through the pairing or juxtaposing of two images, either in a diptych or single image format, the artists expand a narrative reading of the self-portrait.
Located in the heart downtown Ottawa, the Bytown Museum explores the stories of an evolving city and its residents from its early days as Bytown to present day Ottawa. The Museum is located at the Rideau Canal locks between Parliament Hill and the Château Laurier hotel—one of the most picturesque sites in the city.

Yipee! Mad Men Yourself Has Returned!

Posted by April in tv , technology , silly , mad men , free

Slow news day, slow news week, summer of suck at the box office: what are you going to do to distract yourself? Why, Mad Men Yourself, of course! The site's been updated with new wardrobes and accessories, including delicious references to last season: Trudy's fez, Joan's accordion. Because today is dreadfully boring, I decided not to choose between being a skirt or a suit, but to go ahead and try both.

I'm a big believer in making your own fun. If the Daily Show has taught me anything (oh, how it has), it's that the news can play a big role in said fun-making. All you need are a few headlines. Such as:

"Victoria dancers sparkle in the limelight"
Misread that as daylight, and you might think Stephenie Meyer attacked Victoria.

"J'ai tué ma mère fails to win César"
So not only did Xavier Dolan's film lose, it also came home to face a very disappointed parent Montreal Gazette.

Stuart Ross & Stephen Brockwell at Tree: Feb. 23

Posted by admin in writing , workshop , reading , out on the town , other mags , free

On Tuesday, February 23, Tree will host two writers at the Ottawa Arts Court. Local poet / writer and Archibald Lampman award-winner Stephen Brockwell will perform some of his work, followed by Stuart Ross reading from his first collection of stories in over a decade, Buying Cigarettes for the Dog. The evening will begin at 8 p.m., and preceding the reading from 6:45-7:45 Terry Ann Carter will host her first of a series of four workshops for emerging writers.

Stephen Brockwell currently lives in Ottawa but has spent a large part of his life in Montreal and other equally exhilarating places. His Fruitfly Geographic won the 2005 Archibald Lampman Award for best book of poetry by an Ottawa resident. He runs his own IT consulting business from home, and he is the author of several books including The Wire in Fences, The Cometology (ECW Press, 2001), and The Real Made Up (ECW Press, 2007). He has written reviews and articles for The Danforth Review, Rubicon and Books in Canada. Recent work of his has appeared in Arc, Prairie Fire, the Fiddlehead, the Antigonish Review, and Queen St Quarterly.

Stuart Ross published his first literary pamphlet on the photocopier in his dad's office one night in 1979. Through the 1980s, he stood on Toronto's Yonge Street wearing signs like "Writer Going To Hell: Buy My Books," selling over 7,000 poetry and fiction chapbooks. A tireless literary press activist, he is the co-founder of the Toronto Small Press Book Fair and now a founding member of the Meet the Presses collective, Poetry Editor at Mansfield Press, and Fiction & Poetry Editor at This Magazine. Stuart has edited several small literary magazines including Mondo Hunkamooga: A Journal of Small Press Stuff, Syd & Shirley, Who Torched Rancho Diablo? and Peter O'Toole: A Magazine of One-Line Poems. He is the author of two collaborative novels, a previous collection of stories, and six full-length poetry books. He has also published a collection of essays, Confessions of a Small Press Racketeer (Anvil Press), and edited the anthology Surreal Estate: 13 Canadian Poets Under the Influence (The Mercury Press). Stuart has taught writing workshops across Canada. He lives in Toronto. In spring 2009, Freehand Books released his first short-story collection in more than a decade, Buying Cigarettes for the Dog. In spring 2011, ECW Press will release his first novel, Snowball, Dragonfly, Jew.

RED WALL GALLERY presents
METAPHORICAL - SOLO SERIES 2010
Vernissage:  Friday February 12th, 2010, 18:00-21:00 The dresses fabricated by Wesley Kirschner are born of her imagination. She works with glass, newsprint, and piano wire to build an art piece to be photographed. By placing each dress in context, she allows the viewer to momentarily forget about the fashion and creates a setting and image that could be an editorial page in any fashion magazine. It is through this vision and imagination that she creates a visual metaphor for the fashion industry. The Red Wall Gallery is located in SPAO at 168 Dalhousie, at the corner of Bruyère, in the Byward Market.

 Mad Men

As one of the multitude that is dying for Mad Men's return (August 16, and yes, I have marked my calendar), whiling away the hours until its return is as painful as watching Sal hit on Ken right in front of his wife (seriously, I almost cried). Until we can know what's happening with the takeover and Don and Betty's new baby, we have to make our own fun. The lovely people over at AMC have given us Mad Men-ize yourself. As you can see, Peggy and Pete look happy to see me (does that mean Pete's alive?!), Don is Don, Roger's amused, and Joan looks suspicious. My actual hair doesn't look like that, but I couldn't bear to part with the leopard skin pillbox hat (or my cigarette or my martini). What? It's the '60s! That's how they do business, and I'm sure my ciggies are toasted.

Air Conditioned Canada Day

Posted by April in out on the town , ottawa , gatineau-hull , free , art

Posted by April in out on the town , gatineau-hull , free

This just in: you can check out the Canada Museum of Civilization's new exhibit for free this Monday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Why? Because the museum is offering free admission next Monday! Free, baby, free! I assume this has something to due with International Museum Day. I wonder what other local institutions will get in on the act. If you haven't already made plans for Victoria Day, I suggest you include this on your list.
